    The 2008 - 2009 Annual Fund
for the Advancement of Bowen Theory

    May 2009

    Dear Friend and Colleague:

As the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family nears the conclusion of this year’s Annual Fund campaign, we would like to extend a special appeal to those who have generously supported the Center in the past.  We have raised $68,000 to date, but we need your support in these final weeks of the campaign to reach our goal of $125,000.  I am hoping that you can continue that much needed support.

Perhaps the most important reason to support the activities of the Bowen Center is recognizing how much Murray Bowen’s original idea about applying systems thinking to human relationships has helped people manage their lives more successfully. For example, human beings have long recognized both the destructive impact of loneliness and the rejuvenating impact of solitude. Differences between people in this regard are a common source of conflict in relationships. Bowen theory’s description of one person’s yearning for connection and another’s “need for space” as being deeply intertwined helps people see that their differences are not fixed character traits, but a consequence of their interactions. The change in perspective is like a breath of fresh air and a new basis for problem solving.

Dissemination of this and other important aspects of Bowen theory is a key component of the Bowen Center’s mission. The Annual Fund this year will enable us to support this mission by improving our communication and outreach abilities. For example, we have been teleconferencing and web casting conferences and seminars for over five years. As the demand for this service grows, we want to create a “smart classroom” to improve the technical quality of the web casts. Also, we plan to increase the availability of teaching materials on the web site. It will become possible to stream videotaped lectures and conferences sponsored by the Center - a service that people have been urging us to provide for a long time - and download articles from the Family Systems Journal.

Please visit our website (www.thebowencenter.org) to learn more about the exciting work that we are doing and to discover ways that you can deepen your involvement with the Center. Finally, I hope you can donate to the Annual Fund. Your help is needed, appreciated, and will be put to good use.

    My very best,

    Michael E. Kerr, M.D.
    Director
