    Laura Brooks

Laura R. Brooks is a clinical social worker with 30 years of experience. After working for non-profit organizations for many years, she opened a private practice in 1993, which is now located in Ellicott City, Maryland. She was appointed to the faculty of the Bowen Center in 2008. At the Center, she supervises and teaches in the Postgraduate Program. She regularly contributes to the conferences and participates in the Theory Meeting and on the Research Committee at the Center.

Ms. Brooks graduated from the University of Iowa in 1980. Between 1983 and 1991, she did postgraduate training, first at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas and then at the Bowen Center.

Between 1990 and 1996, Ms. Brooks was an Associate Clinical Professor at The University of Maryland and the Catholic University Schools of Social Work. In this role, she supervised social work students in their internships at Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Psychiatry.

In 2004, she began a research study of eight adoptive families from the perspective of Bowen theory with the goal of understanding the influence of the family emotional unit on the life adjustment of the child. In 2009, she was awarded the Polly Caskie Research Award for this study.
