SPRING CONFERENCE 2004: April 17-18, 2004
Relationships, Anxiety, and Health

The decisions people make every day, particularly in important relationships, can powerfully affect the level of chronic anxiety in themselves and in those closest to them. Research is showing precisely how anxiety disturbs the optimal functioning of the brain, the endocrine system, and the immune system. Prolonged disturbances in these systems alter tissues and organs in ways that produce a wide range of illnesses. Reducing anxiety can improve functioning and increase symptoms.

This conference brings together experts on neuroendocrinology, immunology, and Bowen theory. One purpose of the conference is to describe the pathways that mediate the transfer of disturbances in human relationships to the disturbances in cellular relationships that produce diseases. A second purpose is to illustrate how Bowen theory can assist people to manage anxiety and chronic illness through understanding and improving their important relationships.

PART V
The Double-Edged Sword of Immunity: When the System is the Problem, Not the Solution - William R. Clark, PhD

Discussion with Dr. Clark

PART VI
Chronic Illness as a Wake-up Call: A Clinical Interview - Michael E. Kerr, MD Panel

Discussion

Dr. Kerr interviews nurse, Kay Gallagher, about how the diagnosis of the autoimmune disease, scleroderma, has been an invaluable stimulus for examining how her closest relationships can be a key source of chronic anxiety.
