Defining a Self
Kathleen B. Kerr, MSN, MA
9:30-3:30
Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church
3401 Nebraska Avenue, NW, Washington, DC
Bowen theory describes the family as an emotional system which has enormous impact on the functioning of its members. People can work to have more control over their own functioning in the family emotional system. This requires observing both how one responds to the family and how one affects the system. The effort also requires knowing how the family system works and taking action on the basis of that knowledge. Individuals engaged in the process of differentiation of self will describe their efforts.

Is Caregiving Hazardous to One’s Health?
Aviad Haramati, PhD
7:30 PM
Georgetown Family Center
Dr. Haramati, Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at Georgetown University School of Medicine, poses the question of whether family members caring for an ill loved one, or professional caregivers under enough stress to be at risk for becoming physically or emotionally themselves. This presentation will review some recent scientific evidence linking chronic stress to changes in cellular physiology and DNA components (telomeres and telomerase activity), as well as on function of the neuroendocrine and immune systems. However, the strategies to reverse or prevent those effects and maintain physical and emotional health may surprise you.
